Sweet Surrender

NOTE: This is from a conversation that Dr. Peebles had with my father in March 1999 regarding "Sweet Surrender." Dr. Peebles often encourages us to surrender to the embrace of life; surrender to the journey rather than resisting the same, because it takes a lot of effort to hold life at arm’s length.


RON: Why are we so resistant to just surrendering? What is it that we hold onto?

DR. PEEBLES: God bless you indeed. First of all, it is not a process of “just surrendering.” It makes it sound as if it is "just surrender" and that is not what you fear. If it was "just surrender" then it would be rather simple, yah?

RON: Yeah.

DR. PEEBLES: But rather, what you are surrendering to is everything all at one time. That in itself seems rather overwhelming, because what you are really surrendering to is the idea of the understanding that you are worthy of love, and that you are God, God is you, i.e., One and the same.

And God is also a source of energy and creative expression etc, and yet not outside of you, because you are God, God is you. And, so in order to surrender you must believe this. This is surrender wholly and completely. To keep yourself divided from nothing. Allowing yourself to fall into those spaces that at times can be darker spaces, but when you begin to understand this relationship, then you will begin to see it as a rather very beautiful forest, and that you are a courageous adventurer; that you are going to venture deep into the heart of the jungle. What do you find there, but a lot of mystery, intrigue, dynamics, diversity, color and relationships etc. Absolute and perfect balance, by the way. But, it's rather scary! It’s a new space, a new understanding of your own identity. And for you to stand forth on the planet earth, and to share with the world that you are God is very frightening, because it brings to mind inspiration and understanding of hierarchy, for example. But, if you truly understand the God that you are, then you realize that you can proclaim to be God and not feel hierarchy in that at all. Because as a true God you will understand that everyone is God as well. Do you understand?

RON: Yes, I do.

DR. PEEBLES: So you are not pushing away any of it. True surrender is opening up not only to all that you feel is loving and inspiring and good and white light, and so on and so forth, but surrendering as well to the darker spaces. The little demons, the little creepy crawlers of the night. That is you as well. Little pink earth worms, and ones that are not so pink, yah? You understand, the slugs, the leeches, the slime in the bottom of the pond, and it¹s frightening, yah?

RON: Uh huh.

DR. PEEBLES: It¹s all part of the balance.

RON: It¹s all God.

Dr. PEEBLES: Yes, certainly. And you don’t push any of it away, but, what you choose through the state of surrender (complete and utter surrender) is a state of trust. And, to trust yourself wholly and completely, well, what a frightening prospect, yah? But, once you understand it, you realize there is no "there" to get to. There is no proper format, for example, for a human being. Trusting yourself that every word that you choose to bring to the surface is a part of enriching life. Not because it was spoken with love necessarily, in terms of "I love you" and gushy mushy words and so on and so forth, "angels of light and mercy" and what have you, but because you are true to yourself. You are honoring that which you already are. God bless you indeed, you bring that to the surface with complete trust. You bond with yourself within. You surrender to your own value, you surrender entirely, with your entire being to the love that YOU are. Absolutely terrifying to most human beings. And yet, once you surrender that’s where everything happens with greatest of ease. Doors open wide, opportunity is everywhere, in every single moment. You become the grand creator as never before. This is where you unlock the mysteries as to how to bring food to the table simply by a thought. Money into your pocket simply because you choose for it to be there. It’s where you transcend time and space, the mysteries disappear, and suddenly you no longer have to worry about the words that you speak. You no longer have to worry about whether or not you can trust humanity. None of that matters: it is all extraneous to what you know to be true, i.e. that all of it is true. There are lovers, there are liars. There is fire, there is ice. There is hope, there is sadness. Certainly despair. There is as well, sunshine and dark, and is one better than the other? Would you opt for one? Would you, my dear friend, give up all sadness, never to feel it again, in order to be happy forever?

RON: Sounds attractive.

DR. PEEBLES: Does it indeed? You reflect upon that my dear friend.

RON: But, I wouldn’t appreciate the happiness without the sadness.

DR. PEEBLES: You got it. Precisely. How would you understand happiness if you did not have the contrasts? How would you ever understand someone who is sad? You would not experience it the same. How would you help? How would you unite? It is these various states of being that attract, that repel, that create movement and change and growth. Is it bad, for example, to walk away from a relationship?

RON: No.

DR. PEEBLES: It is a part of movement, correct?

RON: Yes.

DR. PEEBLES: Also very frightening to surrender to the same. It is here that everyone upon the planet earth carries within an illusion of separation that there is such a thing as being alone, that you can be outside of any situation, outside of any understanding, and you are not. You ARE that. Do you understand?

RON: Yes, I do.

DR. PEEBLES: Does that help?

RON: Yes, it helps a great deal.

DR. PEEBLES: Do you have anything to fear in surrender?

RON: No.

DR. PEEBLES: And, at the same time, a great deal, yah?

RON: Yeah. Everything to embrace.
